...for almost free. It’s clearly at the end of its life cycle. What should I do with it? I’m thinking cut the fenders out to make room for oversize ATV tires, remove the plastic bumpers to increase approach angles, take off the doors, and hoon it around the farm like a home made side-by-side. But that’s crazy, right?

First time I was ever in a car that was being hooned, it was a Yaris on a gravel farmroad.
May you hoon safely.

I’m gonna say one word, and then walk away - ElCHOmino.

don’t forget to disconnect the airbags before offroad hoonage

I seriously looked at getting one of these as a DD for awhile. I think you’ve got the right idea.

When life gives you lemons, you go Lemons racing.

LeMons?

our old neighbor’s wife drove one of those exactly like that, even same color, for years

As if there was any another option...

Just ram it hard enough into something, should sort it out

What exactly indicates that the car has reached the end of the line? Those cars are stupidly reliable. I wouldn’t mind one for tooting around and keeping miles off the Miata.

Looks like we found the Team OPPO LeMons car.

I’d say strip parts and scrap, but that would mean extending the lives of other Echos and that’s not something I want to see.
So cut away the bodywork, put (relatively) massive mudders on it, throw a diesel turbo on it, replace the back seat with batteries and electrify the rear wheels.
Alternately, because that’s waaaaay too much effort... park it in a field, tie the wheel hard to the left, put it in reverse, drop a brick on the gas and run. Then enjoy the world’s best top.

Hmm. I think I’d strip everything out of it that I could, put a racing seat in it, find a set of cheap wide wheels and put 200tw rubber on them, fab some overfenders, rattle can it matte black and take it to autocross. Bonus points if you can fab up a cheap turbo setup until it blows.

Because no one wants it?
But seriously to your point, it runs fine. It just doesn’t drive fine (tires, brakes, suspension, noises, etc), and no one is going to put money into it to make it better, because you’d still have nothing of value when you’re done.

I like this!

It will be used for at least one good purpose: My 16 year old wants to learn to drive stick, and my wife won’t let him near her 124 Spider.

What’s wrong with it? If it’s not rusted out underneath, then it isn’t at the end of its life cycle.

Hmmm... sounds like a prime candidate for a 24 of Lemons racer...
Tires and brakes don’t count to toward the $600 limit. And the parts and operating costs on it will be cheap.

Shit man... rattle can the rough spots... raffle it off to people in need.
Imagine this scenario. You come to US as a refugee. You have few dollars in your sock. You need to pay rent, and buy groceries. Then you need to get more money to put into your sock so you need a job. You need a car to get to said job. This here might not be a looker or too reliable, but it will drive for a while.
Put up an ad in your area. Something creative for the winner. IDK. Best polka dancer or twerker or arm wrestler.
Gather the interested folks at some field or parking lot (I don’t know where you are) and raffle it off. It could be a hoot.

Welcome to the Echo family, we’ve had one for 8 years and it’s extremly reliable, in my county they were used as cabs so they easily reach the million kilometer mark without issues. If it’s the manual it will do 0-60 in 8.5 seconds and get over 40 mpg easily they are great beginner cars and they deserve to live.

find the meat-iest tires you can fit under there (cut as needed) then rallyX it till it dies.

Looks like a perfect rallycross car if you have a local rallycross league. We have one down here and I’ve been thinking of getting some rough-looking but running FWD thing along these lines to enter and learn with.

My grandmother owned a Toyota Echo like this in the four door variant before she got the Chevy Aveo that I’m using now. I loved that thing for its simplicity. It had a fun look to it except the the speedometer in the middle of the dash. I miss being taken places in it, because those were the good old days. If you did turn it into a real farm cruising machine, it will probably break before it would get to the farm, but that’s a fun idea.
